Who We Are

About James

My name is James. I have loved every minute of my working career. Being a solicitor in London was stimulating, and energising. Being a primary school teacher and working with children was an honour and a privilege and I loved being in the classroom. All Rise represents the next phase of my life and is a perfect blend of the skills and experiences I have accumulated in my different working environments. The best thing is that I work with children who may consider that careers in professions like law is not an option for them, children who may feel that their background precludes them from a professional life. In a very small way, I am hopeful that an All Rise workshop might change their minds

I know that many children reach 13 and have already decided that university is not for them. I also know that universities have a remit to widen participation and that professions like the law are keen to attract a more diverse intake. In a very small way, I am hopeful that an All Rise workshop might change their minds and may ultimately facilitate a more diverse and inclusive workforce in professions like the law.

All Rise is not just talking about diversity, equity and inclusion; it’s getting out there and connecting with young people and encouraging them to believe that professions, like the law, are open to anyone.

In a short time, I have created four crafted and purposeful legal workshops; I have visited a number of primary/secondary schools and I am very proud of what I have achieved. I would love the opportunity to bring one of my workshops to your school.

Our founder's journey to All Rise

1.

1. Early years

I was a ball boy at Wimbledon.
I was not asked back for the second week.

2.

2. University Days

I attended a modern university to study law in a city that Alan Gordon
‘the Money’ Partridge would approve. I was the lead singer of a raw and exciting
new wave band, Brian and the Nylons (not currently featured on Spotify).

3.

3. Post-University

I spent a year in Canada assisting a legal attorney.
I fell in love with the Blue Jays and Molson Beer.

4.

4. Legal career begins

Legal career begins at Macfarlanes. Sharp suits and long days.

5.

5. Work sabbatical in Buenos Aires

One year work sabbatical in Buenos Aires.
Taught English, worked at the Buenos Aires
Herald and learnt to tango (one of those
statements is not true).

6.

6. British Red Cross Society

Legal attorney at the British Red Cross Society.
Worked in London, Geneva and Colombo.
My attempts to learn French whilst in Switzerland
were, once more, unsuccessful.

7.

7. Back to University

Back to University at St Mary’s University and attained
my QTS in Primary Education in 2009 (TW1 4SX).
Couldn’t wait to hit the classroom.

8.

8. Teacher and Head of Juniors

Year 4 teacher and Head of Juniors at Westbourne
House School. So many highlights and very few lowlights.

9.

9. All Rise

Set up All Rise specialising in educational enrichment
courses on a variety of legal topics. My own business at last,
combining my legal and teaching skills. What a journey! Has
everything been leading to this moment?

10.

10. The Future

To take my legal workshops to as many primary/
secondary schools that will have me.
